Jamaica’s next AI skill: taking a useful idea into the workflow
By StarApple AI Editorial Desk
Forward Deployed Engineers connect a real Jamaican work problem to an AI system that can be tested, supported and handed over.

What is an FDE?
FDE means Forward Deployed Engineer: an applied engineer who works alongside the people closest to a problem. They combine software and AI development with process discovery, integration, testing, deployment and user support. Their work begins with the workflow, not with a model looking for a use.
That could mean helping a small business organise product enquiries, supporting a service desk to find approved procedures, or testing an internal document assistant. These are examples to investigate, not claims that AI will automatically improve every Jamaican organisation.
Why proximity matters
Local teams know language, exceptions and customer expectations that a technical specification can miss. An FDE makes that knowledge visible by observing the work, asking what should stay under human control, and building a narrow test around important cases.
A responsible pilot might measure response quality, time, escalation rates and user corrections. It also checks that the system uses permitted data and does not present an uncertain answer as fact. If evidence is weak, revise the design or stop.
From pilot to capability
A delivered system needs an owner, monitoring, clear permissions and a handover. That is how teams gain durable capability instead of a demo that only its builder can run.
StarApple AI’s Forward Deployed Engineer for AI course teaches this applied cycle over eight weeks, from problem framing to evaluation and a capstone.
